The New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) requires that any street works site must have at least one qualified operative on site at all times during works. This course is for operatives that need to work on or in the public highway and for operatives who reinstate roadways in line with the Specification for Reinstatement of Openings in the Highway and the NRSWA 1991.

What is the course content for The New Roads and Street Works Act?

  • Risks associated with striking underground apparatus.
  • Recognise the signs of underground services and interpret utility plans.
  • Use tools, including CAT and Genny to locate underground structures.
  • Mark services ready for excavation.
  • Awareness of signing, lighting, and guarding the workplace, as well as the erection of temporary traffic signals.
  • Methods of excavation, safety measures in the use of road drills and saws, and how to support utility apparatus within the excavation.
  • Selection and storage of excavated materials for re-use Placing and compaction of backfill and sub-base materials.
  • Laying and compaction of cold-lay bituminous materials.

On completion of the course, the individual will have a greater understanding of the risks associated with striking underground services, as well as the skills to identify underground structures, planning for work on the highway, and safety in and around excavations.

The course is mixed classroom and practical, so that all theory can be tested in a safe, supervised environment to ensure full understanding of the material.

No formal entry requirements.

Must be at least 16 years old.

Learners must bring with them safety boots, hard hat, eye and ear protection, working gloves, waterproof clothing and high visibility clothing for use in the practical exercises.

This NRSWA course incorporates assessment and certification under the City & Guilds scheme 6156.

The course also supports registration with SWQR.

The course will take 5 days to complete.
