The Operations / Departmental Manager manages teams and/or projects, and achieve operation / department goals, as part of the delivery of the organisations’ strategy. They work in the public, private, or volunteer sector and in all sizes of organisation.

What are the key responsibilities of an operational / departmental manager?

Specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for the position will be the same.

Key responsibilities include creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, financial and resource management, coaching, and mentoring.

Roles may include: Operations Manager, Regional Manager, Divisional Manager, Department Manager, and Specialist Manager.

Successful learners can progress to a range of qualifications including Operational / Departmental Manager Level 6.

How will each learner's time be split?

  • On-The-Job training
  • Off-The-Job training

Learners will spend 20% of their time on the course completing Off-The-Job training, this includes day release, and any shadow shifts.

Apprentices will be supported by 1:1 meetings with their Programme Tutor.

How will learners be assessed?

  • Knowledge Test using scenarios and questions.
  • Structured competency based interview.
  • Assessment of portfolio of evidence.
  • Assessment of and presentation of the workbased project – with Q&A session.
  • Professional discussion relating to CPD activity.

Learners typically require 5 GCSEs at grade C or higher. Apprentices without Level 2 Maths and English will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 3 prior to the end point assessment.

Learners will receive Operations / Departmental Manager Level 5 certificate. Upon completion, apprentices can register as full members with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management. Those with 3 years of management experience can apply for Chartered Manager status through the CMI.

The apprenticeship will take 2 ½ years to complete.
