Horse groom training

Equine Groom Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship programme which opens the door to the racing industry.

Are you looking to launch a career as an equine groom? As an apprentice, you will work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, knowledge and behaviours within the equine industry. You will earn a wage and be released to study during your working week.

You will work with a variety of horses committing to their care and welfare. This will involve feeding, grooming, handling, preparing and exercising horses as well as carrying out routine yard duties. You must be prepared to work in all weather conditions and may have to work irregular hours. This is a practical hands-on role requiring a strong work ethic, diligence and commitment.

Entry Requirements

To apply for Level 2 Apprenticeship applicants must be age 16+, have completed full-time education and be living in England.  Applicants must have basic horse care skills.

Applicants who haven’t already achieved a GCSE grade 9/A – 2/E or a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification in English and Maths, will develop English and Maths Functional Skills at Level 1 as part of the Apprenticeship programme.

Learners must be in paid employment for the duration of their Apprenticeship programme; learners cannot be self-employed or volunteers. Employers must pay the minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, for a minimum of 15 hours a week.

Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship

Course Information

You will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours through a mixture of practical and theoretical sessions. A blended learning approach will assist your development and progress.
Course Aims

To develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours as required for employment and future career progression within the industry.

What You Will Study
  • Routine yard and field duties
  • Routine health care
  • Medical and specialist treatments
  • Health records
  • Equine terminology
  • Physiology and anatomy
  • Grooming
  • Trimming and clipping
  • Saddlery and equipment
  • Travelling horses
  • Non-ridden and ridden exercise
  • Equitation
Entry Requirements

You will need appropriate employment in the equine industry. It is preferable that you have a minimum GCSE grade 2/D in English and Maths.

Teaching & Learning Approach

You will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours through a mixture of practical and theoretical sessions. A blended learning approach will assist your development and progress.

Work Experience

You will be employed within the industry, working 30 – 40 hours per week.

How You Are Assessed

You will be assessed through an end point assessment (EPA) and graded pass, merit or distinction. Please note that the duration does not include the EPA.

Clothing, Equipment & Additional Costs
  • Stationery such as pens and paper
  • An electronic device to access online learning, i.e. a laptop
  • Riding hat, gloves, boots and jodphurs for practical and equitation lessons
Progression
You may progress to a higher-level apprenticeship or course at the college. You may also be offered a higher-level role in your workplace e.g. Assistant Head Groom.
 
 
Careers
Typical careers include groom, competition groom, hunt groom, assistant yard manager and veterinary assistant.
